Installing an exhaust fan can be done by an ordinary person who wants to save money from hiring a professional technician.

Make sure that you have all your tools ready.  These tools include Screwdrivers, Wire Strippers, Tape Measure, Hammer, Drill and drill bits, Level, Caulk Gun, Sabre Saw and Lighting Source like a plug-in work light or headlamp.

In wiring your exhaust fan, remember to use the easiest existing path like near the light.  For more information on this, consult the wiring plan of the house.  Dealing with electrical wiring needs special attention and skill.  If you are not sure about doing this, better call a technician just for the electrical connection.

Place the switch of your exhaust fan near other frequently use switches like the switch for light.  Exhaust fans can be easily forgotten to turn off because their placements are in remote places like ceilings or walls and may be easily ignored specially if they are the noiseless type.

If you need to open up a ceiling to place the exhaust fan, measure the fan for near-perfect fit even if the outside housing of the fan can cover the mistakes later on. 

To optimize the exhaust fan’s performance, the exhaust port needs to be pointed in the termination point’s direction.  The specified duct diameter size should be used to reduce static pressure that can subsequently reduce also the exhaust fan’s performance.

Nails should never be used to secure the exhaust fan in place.  The vibration causes by the fan can greatly loosen the nails. Always use the screw provided with exhaust fan package.

If possible, follow the instructions in the exhaust fan’s manual up to the last detail.  Exhaust fans vary depending on models and brands.
